What is Domain Privacy Protection?
I want you to think of Domain Privacy Protection as having your name and address UNLISTED in your local phone books or White Pages. Typically this service is provided for a modest yearly fee at White Pages or by your local phone carrier in your city or town. When you are unlisted, it means obviously can’t look you up in phone books and call you.
When you purchase a domain(s), you will have the option of adding the Godaddy Full Privacy Domain Protection at checkout. It works basically the same way, but for websites online. It cost $9.99/year and Godaddy will normally tack it on automatically as an upsell. They also offer another plan called Ultimate Domain Protection & Security for $14.99/year.
This service blocks your personal info such as: Name, address, phone number, email, blood type, lol etc. Having this feature basically privatizes your info so it doesn’t appear on ICANN lookup or the whois directory.
So basically if anybody wants to know who owns a website they would have to go to one of these sources to get it. However, with the Godaddy domain privacy protection, it will block it.
Do You Need to Make Your Domain Private?
Only you can decide and drop the hammer on this. Once you answer this, then it will be clear is Godaddy full domain privacy protection worth it for you. However, there are a number of reasons why people ask themselves this question during the Godaddy checkout screen.
The Godaddy Full Domain Privacy and Protection is 100% optional and not required to make a domain purchase. But should you just buy it anyway? One thing that you MUST remember is that if you DON’T get domain privacy, then your personal information WILL be available to the public.
There are many disadvantages to not biting the bullet and adding the Godaddy Domain Privacy Protection.
For starters, your email will be flooded with spam-like emails from web developers and other sales oriented companies offering you their services. They will constantly try to market web design services, SEO services, etc. Also, your phone will also ring off the hook all day long with sales calls from out of state or unknown numbers. I say this because it has happened to me in the past when I didn’t enable this feature.
Consider some other reasons to get domain privacy protection. According to some stats Statistica, data breaches caused rough 4.2 million in business losses. In 2020, the number of data breaches was over 1,000 cases in the United States. In the same year over 155.8 million individuals were exposed to data exposures of sensitive information in the US. 85% of data breaches are caused by hackers and cyberattackers.
There was a huge Godaddy data breach on November 17 2021 where they announced a security incident which affected 1.2 million of their Managed WordPress hosting users.
All of these stats referenced simply show how important it is to protect our data. To help you to avoid unnecessary frustration, then you must take measures to prevent your personal info from being exposed on the public domain. You can get the Godaddy full domain privacy protection or get domain privacy protection somewhere else.
While looking on reddit a user asked is domain privacy protection worthwhile? The user mentioned he bought a domain without it and got over 30 messages within 24 hours to his inbox from Indians offering “high quality consultancy services”.
However, if you are someone who doesn’t really care who calls you at all hours of the day nor mind getting tons of SPAM emails, unsolicited sales calls or possibly being at risk of domain name hijacking, then just skip domain privacy.
What If You Checkout, But Want To Add Godaddy Full Domain Privacy Protection Later?
No problem. If you already purchased the domain, you can simply go login and click on the “my domains” tab and then click “add privacy” next to your desired domain. I have done this for many of the domains that I own.
Some may decide not to add it at. For example, some people buy and sell domains for profit online. This practice is called domain flipping. There are many helpful domain flipping guides online that show beginners how to make money with it.
If your idea is to buy domains on Godaddy and flip them quickly on Godaddy auctions, Flippa.com, Sedo, etc, then you might bypass Domain Privacy. However, if you are buying a domain on which you plan to build a website on for the long haul, then getting Godaddy Domain Privacy Protection is definitely worth adding it if you already purchased it.
Should You Buy Godaddy Domain Privacy or Not?
Is Godaddy full domain privacy protection worth it? Remember that the purpose of this Godaddy review is not to tell you what to do. I just want to share you what my personal experience has been buying domains online to create websites.
NOTE: I am not a Goddady affiliate nor employee so I have absolutely nothing to gain by telling you to buy it.
Although I have purchased many domains at Godaddy in the past, I made a few changes. Why? The reason is because Godaddy is NOT the cheapest place NOR the only place that offers domain privacy protection for clients.
Including learnanet.com, I own about 30 other domains, many of which I have purchased on Godaddy. The great majority of them have domain privacy while a few others do not have the yearly feature.
However, it is definitely a good feature to have on your domains from the get-go to have that extra peace of mind, decrease spam emails and unsolicited sales calls.
Remember that when you select this option upon checkout, your information will be kept private on the public domain. Godaddy will display their info and then forward any inquiries to your contact email on file if some wants to contact you.
Now that you know what to expect from Godaddy domain privacy protection, recently I decided to STOP buying domains at Godaddy! Say what what??
YES, you read it right! I STOPPED buying them at Godaddy. Years back when I got started online domains were cheaper, but every year they keep going up and up at Godaddy! I love this article!
Keep going!
This is an eye-opening article! As a longtime Godaddy customer who just purchased 3 more domains there, I wondered why I was charged $150 when at check out a price of $75 was listed. Their costumer support is impossible, but I finally got to the truth, they tacked on a $75 protection “disclaimer” ( they do not call it a plan or service. ) but nothing about the “disclaimer” was presented at checkout. And that, according to their Costumer service experts is “your own fault because clearly you made a mistake.” I do not do not even know what level of disclaimed protection I have. Nothing about anything is detailed in my account. It was up to me to figure out that I’d been double charged, what it is that the double charge was for, up to me to have to finally resort to acting out the drunken lumberjack at a broken slot machine in a gas station casino at the end of a demoralizing, humiliating and failed weekend on the desert edge of las Vegas routine, some badly aged ugly old nothing to lose out for blood unrelenting unreasonable unpleasant intimidating smelly beast, dangerous enough to actually induce fear into a costumer service agent who was 8,000 miles away on a computer, just to get them to outline what I’d just paid for…. Who wants to do that? Not me, it’s exhausting. But that’s what it means to be a Godaddy customer. Now, I want to drop their protection and get protection from another source but seamlessly so I’m not unprotected even for a few minutes. And to think I was going to use their website builder and hosting! Sometimes it takes 45 minutes just to get Godaddy costumer service on the line. They’re terrible. Great article here though, and thanks. 😃
